Tidal Energy, Scotland

It is estimated that about 25% of Europe's tidal energy resources could reside in Scotland's coastal areas. It is also thought that tidal power could easily contribute a third of Scotland's energy needs.
With these facts in mind, ScottishPower Renewables have applied for planning permission for two major tidal power installations of 20 large turbines each, to be sited on the seabed of the Pentland Firth and the South of Islay.
A third is to be sited off the North Antrum coast (Northern Ireland).
The plan includes the construction of a major factory in the North East of Scotland, to assemble the huge turbines.
The scheme is to utilise LANSTRØM turbines, designed in Norway, and four years in testing.
